16th Century Venetian Chairs
Known as Sgabelli, this form of chair originated in Tuscany during the Italian Renaissance and soon spread across the regions of Italy. Designed to be placed against a wall and seen from the front, these chairs were very much a luxury item, the carved decoration demonstrating expert craftsmanship.
This rare pair originate from Venice, circa. 1580, and features strong, figurative carving and tracery work.
